According to the South Carolina Press Association, The Greenville News is expected to implement a paywall on July 1. I've wavered on whether this is a good thing for newspapers. Sure, you get a little more money in, however, less people will be reading the articles and looking for information. I also wonder how this will impact advertising rates on the website since there will be less visitors. I looked at the subscription options and it seemed to have few options. How about making a couple of local news and sports stories available for free? Will updated high school football scores be available for free?
According to Gannett Blog, Greenville would follow the lead of the Tallahassee Democrat and The Spectrum in St. George, Utah.
